“Facebook doesn’t work for our brand.” If we’ve heard this once, we’ve heard it a thousand times. Listen, there’s no reason that Facebook shouldn’t be working for you. Lend me an ear and I’ll tell you a little holiday marketing tale.

We’ve all heard rumors of the elusive fan-grabbing promotion that completely changes the tide of your brand’s social presence, bringing you up to Kardashian-status fandom. However, installing an app, uploading creative, and hitting “save” just isn’t enough. Hoping and praying that the power the Facebook promotional elves will lift your promotion on Santa’s sleigh and deliver it, beautifully packaged, to the masses isn’t the path to success. It takes time, effort, and a little social media marketing savvy to get your brand and promotional campaigns to take flight.

Even though it’s the biggest social networking site in the galaxy, you have to remember that Facebook is not in and of itself a full-service marketing vehicle.

Instead of blaming the CEO in the hoodie, think about what you could have done to drive more awareness for the promotion on your Facebook page and avoid that lump of coal.

The truth is the most successful marketers take as much time developing how they’re going to bring traffic to the Page as they do in developing the promotion itself. Just know the most clever and compelling offer cannot get off the ground without traffic, so think about how you can drive more eyeballs to your Page. Facebook ads are a good way to get started, but think outside the box a bit. Are you putting an inspiring call-to-action on your in-store receipts? Mentioning your promotion and Page URL in your radio spots? Informing every one of your employees (yes, non-digital staff) to get the word out on your latest effort?

We get it – Facebook’s free; but you have to invest energy and a sometimes a little budget in order to make a promotion successful. Facebook is a vehicle for your brand but without the gas, it just won’t go.
